Will There Be a Second Season of House of the Dragon?

Although the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon has only recently premiered, a second season is undoubtedly already in the works.

The 10-episode television show is 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and is based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood. It describes the events that brought about the demise of House Targarayen and ultimately gave rise to the civil war known as the Dance of Dragons.

Production on the series began in 2021 when Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy were chosen to play the younger and older versions of Princess Rhaenyra, respectively. The show’s other main actors are Matt Smith as Prince Daemon, Paddy Considine as King Viserys, Emily Carey and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower’s younger and older selves, respectively.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter dated February 2022, HBO’s content head Casey Bloys offered a prediction for the future of the House of the Dragon franchise, which we are now impatiently awaiting to see.

“In general, I prefer to employ an approach where we debate prospective screenplays and plotlines for the second season. However, we frequently enjoy monitoring a show’s development, according to the source quoted by Boys. But if I had to guess, I’d say there is a good probability that a second season of House of the Dragon will air. However, we frequently prefer to allow things some time to calm down and air. That being said, we typically get ready for concerts and set ourselves up for success.

According to a later THR report, the television network “is ready to greenlight a second season of Dragon very swiftly after the show’s launch if the numbers are high.”

For context, the website stated that Game of Thrones ended with 19.3 million overnight viewers across all platforms, an increase from its initial U.S. audience of 2.2 million watchers. HBO’s Executive Vice President and Head of Drama, however, told the publication that “I don’t believe anybody is assuming this show will pick off, from a ratings standpoint, right where Thrones left off.”

The actual judges of House of the Dragon’s chances of succeeding in season two will be its audience, many of whom were disappointed or offended by the controversial series finale of Game of Thrones. Can the show’s creators live up to viewers’ expectations or, at the very least, move over the unfortunate first season’s ending? Only time will tell.
