Avenue 5 Season 2 Trailer Promises Complete Anarchy in Outer Space

Since March 2020, a lot has changed in the world, but we still remember two things about the near-future comedy Avenue 5: a) we liked the zany characters, the majority of whom are imprisoned on a disastrous luxury space cruise; and b) the plot ended on a hell of a cliffhanger.

The Avenue 5’s flustered captain, played by Hugh Laurie, still has to figure out how to explain to the increasingly agitated crew and passengers that they can’t return to Earth for eight years, rather than the intended journey length of eight weeks, in the second and final season’s trailer. Things have undoubtedly gotten (hilariously) worse for everyone. Additionally, the food supply is growing low… and they might be heading straight for the sun?

“The end of the idiot dictator is near!”

What HBO has to say about season two is as follows: In a not-too-distant future where space tourism is a growing industry, “Avenue 5 transports us. Hugh Laurie’s Captain Ryan Clark is in over his head while operating Herman Judd’s (Josh Gad) opulent spaceship after it is disastrously thrown off course, turning what was supposed to be an eight-week trip into an eight-year journey. Season two picks up five months after the crew’s unsuccessful attempt to reroute the ship, and it follows the crew as they struggle to lead, calm, control, and, if necessary, hide from the passengers. The crew includes feisty engineer Billie (Lenora Crichlow), unpredictable head of customer relations Matt (Zach Woods), and devoted right-hand Iris (Suzy Nakamura). They are celebrated as heroes on Earth, and everyone in outer space can hear them shout.

Rebecca Front, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ethan Phillips round out the ensemble cast along with special guests Andy Buckley, Jessica St. Clair, Kyle Bornheimer, Adam P., Daisy May Cooper, Lucy Punch, Leila Farzad, Jonathan Aris, and Arsher Ali.

The eight-episode second season of Armando Iannucci’s Avenue 5 premieres on October 10 on HBO and HBO Max. Armando Iannucci is currently developing a superhero satirical television series for HBO.
